Albert Edward Downer was born on the 22nd July1892 in Calbourne.
In 1901 Albert is 8 years old and living at Fullholding Cottage, Calbourne
In 1911 Albert is 18 and a labourer on farm. He is living at Fullholding Cottage.
I am not sure when Albert joined the Isle of Wight Rifles but it is likely to have been around 1909. I have postcards sent from him whilst training in Sandown. The earliest dated one is from 1914. The postcards can be found in the World War 1 section
Albert was killed at Gallipoli on 31st October 1915 and is buried in the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery. His war gratuity went to Miss Ethel Amy Louisa Arnold later Mrs Barnes. It is unknown who she was to Albert although her mother was Louisa Pitman thought to be a cousin of Ellen Pitman
If any facts or pictures are wrong please let me know on the contact details
